A Complete Guide to Breweries in Asheville and Beyond!

Breweries in Downtown Asheville

1. Burial

Asheville NC Brewery Guide: Burial

With three Asheville locations, and two others in North Carolina, the South Slope location is the original Burial space. A self-proclaimed dive, boasting a location that’s rough around the edges is a definite nod to how effortlessly cool Burial is.

The cans themselves are unmistakable at any store for their sometimes goth and dark designs and the philosophical, thought-invoking beer names themselves. Their beer variety is wide and everchanging, with detail given to quality ingredients and complex palates, and definitely never boring.

The location boasts two bars, indoor and outdoor seating, a full kitchen menu, and slushies! Check their website for specials that aren’t often seen in Asheville, as well as live music.

South Slope: 40 Collier Ave, Asheville

Forestry Camp Taproom: 10 Shady Oak Dr, Asheville

Eulogy: 10 Buxton Ave, Asheville

2. Funkatorium

Complete Guide to Asheville's Breweries: Funkatorium

The Funkatorium is a Wicked Weed Brewing venture born from the love of sour beers. The first sour beer dedicated taproom on the East Coast features over a dozen taps that showcase old-world-style beers. If you’re not a sour person, or have never had one before, worry not, for they have other beer types and creative cocktails available too.

Walk or drive by this building, and the inviting large planters and aesthetically painted building will catch your eye and draw you in. Step inside and you’ll find a considerable space with outdoor seating and a unique and comprehensive food menu that makes this place one of the most unique Asheville breweries.

Location: 147 Coxe Ave, Asheville

3. Green Man Brewery

Complete Guide to Breweries in Asheville: Green Man

A South Slope staple since 1997, Green Man is a brewery that’s recognized for its loyalty to traditional English-style beers. Originally a brewpub, new ownership in 2010 expanded the building to what it is now, a three-story, 20,000-square-foot, iconic space.

The top level is an indoor/outdoor taproom that overlooks production with a stunning view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. They have a selection of beer that is packaged all year long, as well as exclusives available only at the taproom.

The Green Man is a common symbol of spring, which I think is the perfect time to visit the brewery and watch the mountains come back into bloom from the top patio with a pint of Resin Theory!

Location: 27 Buxton Ave, Asheville

4. Wicked Weed

Asheville NC Brewery Guide: Wicked Weed

Probably one of the most recognizable breweries in Asheville is Wicked Weed Brewing. Since 2012, Wicked Weed has pushed the envelope in their beers and expansion as more than a company but a symbol. The brewpub is a family-friendly joint that has a full-scale restaurant, downstairs taproom and beer garden, bottle shop, and ample indoor and outdoor seating.

The brewery gets quite busy during the summer, and they do not accept reservations or call-ahead seating, so make sure you get there early enough to walk around the area before sinking into a beer and burger. With over 26 beer offerings – from lagers to decadent stouts – there is something to satisfy all tastes.

South Slope: 91 Biltmore Ave, Asheville

West: 145 Jacob Holm Way, Candler

5. Catawba Brewing Co.

An at-home spot for good beer, dogs, and fun with friends and family on the South Slope is Catawba. Since their start in 1999, Catawba prides themselves on being approachable and easygoing. There’s a spacious outdoor seating area, 30 taps, and guided tastings.

Catawba is easily most known for their White Zombie, a drinkable White Ale, but one shouldn’t overlook their more fruity ales or seasonal specials. Flights are a common favorite to share with friends, as this brewery has ample spaces for large groups.

Location: 32 Banks Ave, Asheville

6. DISSOLVR

Complete Guide to Breweries in Asheville: DSSOLVR

Like your trippy younger brother who sells pins he makes at Electric Forest, DISSOLVR is proudly strange. The small brick building stands out on Lexington with a certain air of a cult… but like a cool cult you strive to join.

Yet once inside, the space surprises you with bursts of bright, colorful designs, artwork, and… aliens? A huge variety of unusual flavors is not to be outdone by their continual use of the highest quality ingredients to create a top-notch product.

Everything I’ve drank from them is stellar and one of a kind. They offer drafts and to-go cans, which are worth it just to marvel at the artwork on each can. They have limited indoor seating and a cozy patio. You can tell a lot of heart and creativity goes into everything they do at DISSOLVR.

Location: 63 N Lexington Ave, Asheville

7. French Broad River Brewery

Since 2000, French Broad River Brewery has been helping shape the craft beer culture in Asheville. They draw their inspiration from the wildlife and rivers of the area and try to embody the spirit of the river in all they do.

A space that was made for events, with a large indoor area and small stage, French Broad River Brewing regularly hosts local bands, including a reggae night and Grateful Dead tribute band. The beer is a traditional European style, with rotating seasonals and small batches.

There isn’t a full-service kitchen, but the brewery has no problem with you bringing in your own food, and in the summer, it isn’t uncommon to see the outdoor patio filled with an equal number of pint glasses as pizza boxes.

Location: 101 Fairview Rd D, Asheville

8. Asheville Brewing Company

Complete Guide to Asheville's Breweries: Asheville Pizza and Brewing

With multiple locations across Asheville, I will touch just on the South Slope location. With World Beer Cup award-winning beers, awesome and creatively topped pizzas, and a huge covered patio, Asheville Brewing can really do no wrong.

The space is colorful and bright, with generous seating and an animal-friendly patio. I first fell in love with Asheville Brewing on vacation years ago, when I was able to get a pizza and a six-pack delivered to my Airbnb!

South Slope: 77 Coxe Ave, Asheville

9. Hillman Beer

Asheville NC Brewery Guide: Hillman Beer

The humble beginnings that started with homebrewing in an apartment morphed into what is now Hillman Beer. Located in Asheville, Old Fort, and Morganton, Hillman is a family-owned brewery that emphasizes comfort, community, and quality.

The Asheville location is spread out more than the usual Asheville digs. Its own parking lot, plenty of variety for indoor and outdoor seating, including tables out back that sit along the Sweeten Creek River, offers a lovely ambiance. Expect a well-rounded beer menu featuring classic German-inspired brews, lagers, browns, and everything in between.

They offer crowlers and kegs as well! The food menu here is above-average bar fare, from a killer fried chicken sandwich to a light and flavorful kale salad. Hillman is proud to partner with local farmers and vendors as often as they can, and the brewery has a Wednesday special you don’t want to miss.

Location: 25 Sweeten Creek Rd, Asheville

10. Ginger’s Revenge

Asheville NC Brewery Guide: Gingers Revenge

An avid homebrewing couple, David and Cristina moved to Panama, where they were determined to keep their craft growing. With availability of different ingredients being a challenge at times, they worked with what they had, which was ginger.

Thankfully for ginger lovers everywhere, Ginger’s Revenge was born. Their ginger beer is light, flavorful, and crisp in a way that is different from your traditional beer, with citrus and floral notes usually playing a part.

All their beer is gluten-free and made with almost all organic ingredients. The brewery has eight ginger beers on tap, an impressive variety of non-alcoholic drinks, and an inviting lounge area filled with board games.

Location: 829 Riverside Dr #100, Asheville

11. Twin Leaf Brewery

Best Breweries in Asheville, NC: Twin Leaf

Twin Leaf is an engaging Asheville brewery with friendly staff that focuses on brewing the classics. They have indoor games, lots of green space inside and out with plants everywhere you look, an open concept, and an expansive ceiling with giant fans that are a blessing in the summer.

Weekly trivia and karaoke are also on the roster. Twin Leaf is dedicated to supporting conservation efforts and childhood STEM education, and they consistently partner with new organizations to support these endeavors. The Aspect Ratio, a hazy NEIPA, is a favorite at this brewery.

Location: 144 Coxe Ave, Asheville

12. White Labs Brewing Co.

Asheville NC Brewery Guide: White Labs Brewing

With one location in Asheville, and the other in California, White Labs Brewing is a unique Asheville brewery and experience – a perfect collaboration where the love of beer and science unite to create a rock-solid union.

Birthed from a group of biochemists who were dedicated to finding ways to expand brewing, this is the brewery to go to if you’re a beer nerd or a budding homebrewer. Their unique ability to ferment the same beer with different yeast strains to create distinctly different taste profiles is quite impressive.

Make sure to pair whichever beer you choose with the kimchi fries for a flavor explosion!

Location: 172 S Charlotte St, Asheville

13. Hi-Wire Brewing

Complete Guide to Breweries in Asheville: Hi-Wire

With locations quickly popping up all over the South and two more additions to the original Asheville spot in the past few years, Hi-Wire is quickly coming up on the title of the most recognizable brewery in Asheville.

The Biltmore Village taproom is a huge 27,000-square-foot space where you can enjoy one of their 30 taps next to the brew tanks where they were made. Vibrant murals, a large patio, unique family-friendly games, and a private parking lot make this location a must-visit.

The River Arts District location is the newest in Asheville, featuring a beer garden made from upcycled shipping containers that are covered in murals. This location also has ice cream (yay!) and pinball machines.

The South Slope location is the smallest in town. Offering the one-off small batch beers and a “hidden tropical oasis” out back. The rainbow building is impossible to miss. I don’t think I have anything bad to say about any Hi-Wire beer I’ve had, and their flagships always hit the spot.

South Slope: 197 Hilliard Ave, Asheville

River Arts District: 284 Lyman St, Asheville.

Biltmore Village: 2A Huntsman Pl, Asheville.

14. 7 Clans Brewing

7 Clans Brewing is a majority female Indigenous-owned company that derives its name from the 7 Clans of the Cherokee. They focus on producing a high-quality product imbued with integrity, creativity, and character and are a breath of fresh air in an industry that is heavily male.

It’s a comfortable and inviting space that feels unlike most industrial breweries in the best way. Clean, simple, and with lots of outdoor seating, this intimate brewery is the perfect place to check out when you just want to relax and kick back with a delicious Strawberry Saison.

Check out their social media for a list of the rotating food trucks available.

Location: 66 Sweeten Creek Rd, Asheville

15. One World Brewing

Located three flights below bustling downtown lays the speakeasy… I mean brewery, One World Brewing. Enter through the secret hobbit hole entrance, lose track of time and space, and enjoy yourself in this inclusive, comfortable brewery.

The beer list is impressive and encompassing, with something for everyone on their menu, as well as crowlers and growlers to-go. With wall-to-ceiling wood that’s giving and worn and rich feeling, you really do feel like you could bunker down here forever.

Board games, darts, and a view of the original brewhouse make it easy to have a few beers and forget about the time. They have another location in West Asheville that couldn’t be more different. The large space is wide open and a regular spot for live music and pre/after parties.

“OWB” is about what magic happens when the whole becomes greater than the sum of its parts.

Location: 10 Patton Ave, Asheville

Breweries in East Asheville

16. Highland Brewing

Complete Guide to Asheville's Breweries: Highland Brewing

As easily as recognizable as Wicked Weed, but with tenfold the outdoor space, is none other than Highland Brewing. I always suggest this brewery to people visiting for various reasons. The beer of course is great. I’ve literally never had a bad beer by them and look forward to their Oktoberfest and Cold Mountain all year.

But their outdoor space is unparalleled in size by anyone else around. They have an event center, a barrel room, a taproom, a taproom patio, volleyball courts, an outdoor stage, disc golf, hiking trails – the list goes on.

The meadow at their taproom is a huge outdoor space, where in summer, you can see copious crowds of people from all walks of life lounging in the grass or sitting in hammocks. The meadow has an outdoor bar, stage, bathrooms, and, in the summer, live music. You’ve got to check out Highland, Asheville’s original brewery since 1994.

Location: 12 Old Charlotte Hwy #200, Asheville

17. Cursus Keme

Complete Guide to Asheville's Breweries: Cursus Keme

Tucked behind gates and vines overlooking Swannanoa River lies Cursus Keme. The once Wright Motor Lines facility turned brewery does a great job recognizing the history of the building while incorporating new life into it.

The inside is filled with ambient lighting, massive wood family-style seating, and tons of plants in an open space. Outside is more seating with shade, greenery, and the babble of the river. Cursus Keme’s website is minimalistic, so you won’t find a display of all their beers or offerings. It’s enigmatic in an enticing way that makes you want to unearth this gem for yourself.

Their reviews speak volumes about their beer selection and vibe. In the summer, you can often expect food trucks, live music, and lots of smiling faces enjoying a cold beer in their beautiful outdoor space.

Location: 155 Thompson St, Asheville

18. New Origin Brewing Company

A family and pet-friendly space, New Origin Brewing feels more like a contemporary coffee shop than a brewery. Light and open, funky abstract-shaped murals adorn the space, giving the perfect “work from your computer” vibe, and hey, you deserve a delicious handcrafted beer while you do so.

This modern brewery has a rotating brewing list that also includes hard seltzers. Although there is no kitchen, 900 Degreez Pizza truck is there Wednesday through Sunday, and there is tons of space for an outdoor picnic.

Location: 131 Thompson St, Asheville

Breweries in West Asheville

19. All Sevens Brewing

I am embarrassed to say I’ve walked by this space multiple times without knowing they were brewing beer inside this quaint and unassuming building, which I kind of love. All Sevens Brewing operates inside of the Westville Pub, with the philosophy to keep it simple and consistent.

With its brick interior and wood and vinyl booths, it’s reminiscent of a simpler time and reminds me of my local family diner as a kid. This is definitely a bar that gives you the “Cheers” vibe (did I just age myself terribly?) in the most inviting way.

They’re open late, with a menu that screams comfort food but bumped up a notch. The beer menu isn’t overwhelming but has all the flavorful staples any beer lover wants – from ambers to IPAs to porters.

Location: 777 Haywood Rd, Asheville

20. Oyster House Brewing Company

Oyster House Brewing has been an iconic staple of West Asheville since 2009. Sitting on the corner of Haywood and Dorchester, the brewery and restaurant is unmistakable as the number one neighborhood joint to get quality seafood and a beer made with love.

With a dream that started in the ‘90s for a unique beer that would complement oysters, the owner built himself a mash tun and started tirelessly working to create that perfect beer. Thousands of beers have been sold since then, and locals rave about the space. It’s safe to say Oyster House is around to stay.

I’d recommend a dozen steamed oysters and a Bourbon Barrel Aged Moonstone Oyster Stout!

Location: 625 Haywood Rd, Asheville

21. Archetype Brewing

Asheville NC Brewery Guide: Archetype

An open-format taproom offers enough space for large or small groups; it is also their production facility and one of the few breweries in the area that has a great rooftop deck. Archetype has free parking (a feat on its own in West Asheville), live music, and many nearby restaurants for you to grab food and bring it on over.

They are dog and family-friendly, of course. In their 10-barrel brewhouse, they have a solid flagship as well as more experimental rotating beers. Their interesting name is derived from renowned psychiatrist Carl Jung, who believed that all human behavior can be grouped into 12 archaic universal patterns.

According to their website: “At Archetype, the four main ingredients in our beer (grain, hops, yeast, and water) are mindfully combined to bring out its own personality and behavior, which in turn allows it to take on the qualities of Jung’s archetypes.”

Location: 265 Haywood Rd, Asheville

Breweries in North Asheville

22. Zillicoah Beer Co.

Complete Guide to Breweries in Asheville: Zillicoah

Located along the banks of the French Broad River is Zillicoah. This Asheville brewery is known for its huge outdoor space, constant live music, and its farmhouse ales and lagers. Their outdoor space is truly impressive, especially if you want a brewery that’s got room for the whole family!

There’s a large covered back porch with toys for the little ones, shade sails, lush grass along the river, an outdoor fire pit, and a killer Filipino food truck. Only 7 minutes from downtown, with a beer menu that breaks down all the brewing talk into easy-to-digest descriptions, Zillicoah should be on your list of Asheville breweries to check out.

Location: 870 Riverside Dr, Asheville

23. Nine Mile Brewing

Probably the newest brewery on this list, Nine Mile Brewing is a love child from none other than foodie favorite, Nine Mile. The former manager, now head brewer, took a crash course from all the notable brewers around Asheville and brought his skills back home.

Located at their Montford location, they are still finalizing their flagship menu but you better believe it will have a stout, golden ale, IPA, and Mexican lager. If the new brewery is anything like the delicious food that we’ve come to expect from Nine Mile, then I’m sure they will be met with nothing but success and a loyal patronage.

Location: 233 Montford Ave, Asheville

24. Salt Face Mule Brewing

Complete Guide to Asheville's Breweries: Salt Face Mule Brewing

An Asheville brewery brought forth to honor all the hardworking farmers, friends, and of course mules. Salt Face Mule Brewing believes in community and honoring their Appalachian roots with good ol’ Southern food and easy-drinking beers, most of which are named after common Southern proverbs.

A putt-putt course is on the grounds, with future plans of an RC track, to make Salt Face Mule a family-friendly place to hang out and sit a spell. The beer is made for blue collar, honest people, but they’re not afraid to stray into more experimental beers as well.

You also have an opportunity to name one of their beers with a Southern saying from your arsenal. I felt oddly satisfied doing so, knowing my eccentric Ma-Maw in Kentucky would be happier than a fox in the henhouse if my offbeat beer name was picked.

Location: 450 Weaverville Hwy, Asheville

25. Outsider Brewing

Home to the only transparent brewing in the world offering patrons a 360-degree view of the entire brew process is just one of the reasons why Outsider Brewing is one of the most unique breweries in Asheville.

Aiming to connect their customers to the process, Outsider blurs the lines between taproom, brewhouse, and craft studio. On certain brewing days, they give patrons the opportunity to see top brewers from around the world create and excel at their craft in person.

Outsider Brewery is fueled by a passion for craft beer and all the people along the way who touch on the process, as well as a belief that having a personal relationship with the beer makes the taste even better.

Location: 939 Riverside Dr, Asheville

Breweries in the River Arts District

26. River Arts District Brewing

The newer River Arts District Brewing is a “beer first” kind of place – a brewing mindset that built its ideals on starting with an amazing flavor base and working their way up from there. A unique brewery in Asheville, not just because of its location in the coveted and artsy RAD area but also because the brewery is part of a 100-year-old stone-cutters workshop.

The brewery did a great job staying true to the original architecture by using as many original, refurbished, or repurposed pieces as possible. This place is committed to variety but dedicated to keeping a consistent style and flavor profile to ensure something familiar to everyone.

Location: 13 Mystery St, Asheville

27. New Belgium Brewing

Best Breweries in Asheville, NC: New Belgium

One of the biggest and fastest growing microbreweries in America, New Belgium is a company that puts people over profits every day. Located in Colorado, and then opening their second location in Asheville, the certified B corporation brewery knows how to do beer.

Rotating food trucks, tours, and a comprehensive beer list that also includes hard teas and seltzers are just a few of their plentiful offerings. The space is huge and has patios galore and walkable bridges overlooking the river and boasting a great view of the River Arts District. New Belgium is a place you can spend serious time at!

Location: 21 Craven St, Asheville

28. Wedge Brewing Company

Asheville NC Brewery Guide: Wedge

Wedge is one of those Asheville breweries that is effortlessly cool and urban, like a place that the buildings sprung up around, not the other way around – which is kind of what happened.

A group of artist friends saw the diamond in the rough in the dirt parking lot, started creating a high-quality beer, covered everything in graffiti, and hence Wedge was born. With two locations in the River Arts District, as well as one in Grove Arcade, Wedge serves up easy-drinking lagers and fruit-forward ales and has a rotating schedule of food trucks.

Wedge Studios: 37 Paynes Way, Asheville

Foundation: 5 Foundy St #10, Asheville

Grove Arcade: 1 Page Ave Ste 152, Asheville

Breweries in South Asheville

29. Sweeten Creek Brewing

Complete Guide to Asheville's Breweries: Sweeten Creek Brewing

Sweeten Creek is another hidden gem of the brewery world in Asheville. While many places in the area are family and pet-friendly, Sweeten Creek Brewing is the only one that can claim they have a private fenced-in dog park, let alone an 8,000-square-foot one!

On top of a dog park, they also have two volleyball courts, an outdoor stage, a tasting room, an outdoor beer shack, and tasty eats from Bears BBQ. This relatively new brewery has already got awards stacking up in their name – from the NC Brewers Cup to the US Open Beer Championship. Their Burn Dawger Dawn is raking in the awards for its malt-forward sweetness and balanced, toasty nut flavor.

Location: 1127 Sweeten Creek Rd, Asheville

30. 12 Bones Brewing

Complete Guide to Breweries in Asheville: 12 Bones Brewing

In 2019, BBQ champs 12 Bones decided to create a perfect match for their delicious BBQ… beer. The 12 Bones Brewing taproom, located on Hendersonville Road, is a large brick building that houses their production facility and open-format taproom.

The owners say it was their dream to offer a unique BBQ and Beer experience to intertwine home cooking and a variety of beer that complements that in a relaxed setting. They brew small-batch limited releases and year-round beers, and have beers available to purchase to go.

Location: 2350 Hendersonville Rd, Arden

31. Voodoo Brewing Co

Bright and colorful with a wide range of craft beers, each made with the highest quality ingredients, you can expect a high standard when visiting Voodoo Brewing. Voodoo is a newer location off Sweeten Creek Road, with ample parking and an open, family-friendly space.

They even have a few arcade games and board games for kids and adults alike to enjoy. The food menu is a fun spin on familiar favorites, with bites everyone will agree on. The beers are just as unique as the decor would lead you to believe.

I would suggest the Lacto-Kooler beer, a Sour Berliner Green, which is exactly as it sounds – bright green in appearance! It is also the official beer of Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios.

Location: 3578 Sweeten Creek Rd, Arden
